West Australian Ballet was formed in 1952 by Madame Kira Bousloff, formerly a Prima Ballerina with the Ballets Russes. The company is proud of its heritage as Australia’s longest running ballet company.
Artistic Director Aurélien Scannella’s energy and commitment provides the driving-force for the company’s innovative work and artistic acclaim. Based in the heritage listed West Australian Ballet Centre, the company offers an extensive program of dance throughout the year including four major seasons in Perth, international touring, regional touring throughout Western Australia, choreographic workshops, a state-wide education program, and other community activities.
Classical ballet forms the foundation of the company’s vocabulary, combined with a distinct contemporary outlook. WAB stages everything from full-length classical ballets and narrative ballets to contemporary works that encompass a variety of choreographic styles.

Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company is committed to sharing stories with our community, created by our community, through theatre.
Yirra Yaakin (Yir-raarh Yaarh-kin] which means “Stand Tall” in Noongar language, is one of Australia’s leading Aboriginal performing arts organisations producing award-winning, world-class theatre that is exciting, entertaining, educational, authentic and culturally appropriate. Established in 1993, the Year of Indigenous People, as Yirra Yaakin Noongar Theatre, we started off with one successful funding application, three staff members and the desire to provide the Aboriginal community with an artistic outlet for positive self-determination. More than twenty two years later, Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company, with a combined board and staff of 18, has evolved into a respected cultural leader and artistic hub for Aboriginal people from all over Western Australia, Australia, and indeed, around the world. Our stories have reached 13 countries in five continents and we have won awards for our theatre, governance and our partnerships, including a prestigious Sidney Myer Award for our record of facilitating Indigenous artistic programs. The company has commissioned and premiered over 50 new theatre works. These include major Festival presentations such as Waltzing the Wilarra, One day in 67, Aliwah, Windmill Baby, and Cruel Wild Woman. Prominent Aboriginal writers have included Dallas Winmar, Mitch Torres, David Milroy, Sally Morgan and Derek Nannup, amongst many others who have contributed to the Yirra Yaakin experience. Yirra Yaakin is proud to have produced a body of work unequalled in innovation, excellence and cultural significance. However, it’s not just our professional performance program that has won us awards and critical acclaim. Yirra Yaakin has always had a broad education and community engagement program with a development base to ensure we continue to have Indigenous trainees working within the Australian theatre industry. Yirra Yaakin’s priority is to ensure Aboriginal theatre remains under Aboriginal control and keeps providing opportunities for Aboriginal artists at all levels of theatre creation and production.

I began my professional career as freelance photographer in Sydney in 1999, while also working as photographer and desk editor at The Australian Financial Review. My interest in photojournalism took me to Timor-Leste in 2003. For the next decade I worked for the United Nations as a peacekeeping mission photographer documenting life in conflict zones such as Burundi, South Sudan, West Africa (at the height of the Ebola response), East Timor and the Democratic Republic of The Congo. Even though those years spent in the field with my camera were truly rewarding, the nomadic lifestyle took its toll. I needed to drop my suitcase somewhere peaceful, a place where I could sleep and shower safely. I craved open spaces and rugged natural beauty that had brought me to Australia in the first place, as a 27-year-old seeking adventures far from my European homeland. In 2013, I returned to Australia and established a home base in Margaret River. My first project since moving to Western Australia was a photographic exhibition and book launch in July 2014, titled Margaret River Region FROM ABOVE, a self-published book on aerial views of the South West region exhibited at The Margaret River Gallery. In October 2015, I exhibited Gungurrunga Ngawa (Look Above). A series of photographs shot above the Western Australian Goldfields salt lakes as part of my on-going project 'Ngala Wongga' documenting both the landscape and the region’s inhabitants, as well as the cultural significance of the Goldfields languages.

Tom Ansell lives and works in the South-West region of Western Australia. Currently, he is studying a BA:Hons., where he is focusing on figurative drawing & portraits exploring existential themes. On the side, Tom is an art tutor at a local art centre and also works in an art glass gallery. His works display a fascination with certain subjects that have been examined and questioned for what they are, or appear to be, and why. Usually, the work follows an experimental route. Recently, there has been a shift from the arduous and obsessively detailed representation of subjects towards the more immediate, spontaneous and suggestive kind.

Our vision: 'Bringing Culture and Arts into our communities, making it accessible to all.’
Kambalda Arts Centre is our home, located at the entrance into Kambalda West, off Goldfields Highway, 55km south of Kalgoorlie, on the road to Esperance. Our centre has an Art Gallery with local Goldfields Artist’s work on display, together with local craft for sale. We are diverse, also having a collection of very interesting history for visitors and provide some tourist information on weekends, when the Visitor’s Centre is closed. The Arts Centre was formerly a service station that was upgraded and is ideal for visual Arts activities, having several compartments, plus a purpose built and equipped Art Shed, with provision for pottery. The history of our organisation, the endeavours to keep the dreams alive and kicking are quite amazing. A guided tour through the complex can inspire, together with some of the “tales”. There are regular workshops that are supported regionally, including attendees from Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie. Artists enjoy our friendly atmosphere in tranquil surrounds and usually ask for a follow on. Our services also include craft days each Thursday, regular monthly Sunday markets in town. We support Country Arts WA’s annual “Shows on the Go”, with performances in the Kambalda Community Recreation Facility in the hub of town.

Australian artist Sue Helmot began her arts career in Melbourne completing a Bachelor of Arts at Victoria College. As a young artist she taught ceramics before progressing to curating exhibitions and public art projects. In 2010, the lure of a dream to live in the North of Western Australia pulled Sue away from Melbourne’s art scene and into the remote landscape of the Gascoyne region.
Moving to a vast landscape nestled amongst ancient World Heritage sites heightened Sue’s emotions and inspired the exploration of fresh ideas in her arts practice. An urge to interpret her new surroundings with unbridled freedom, was the catalyst for a transition in Sue’s arts practice from ceramics to painting.
An empathy with the landscape is evident in Sue Helmot’s work which is marked by a keen eye for unique compositions. Her love of colour is often used in her paintings to emphasise beauty from unexpected sources found in her surroundings. Sue is best known for her landscape paintings of the Gascoyne region which reveal life and beauty in what is considered to be an arid environment.
Sue Helmot is professional artist based in Carnarvon Western Australia. Her work has been exhibited in group shows throughout Western Australia since 2010. She has been commissioned by private collectors in Melbourne and Western Australia. Sue Helmot is currently Artist-in-Residence for the Gascoyne Food Council.

Originally from a Yorkshire farming family, I became a Special Needs teacher before migrating to WA with my family in 1988. We settled in Gidgegannup, and established a large commercial goat dairy.
Since retiring from farming in 2005, I’ve had time to pursue my neglected interest in art. Initially, gaining a Certificate 4 in Visual Arts and Crafts (Challenger TAFE, Rockingham); followed by a BA in Fine Arts through Open University (which included studies in computer skills, social media, and web design).
My art is inspired by nature and ecological issues. I believe that the protection of our environment is the fundamental global challenge facing humanity today. Artworks can be powerful tools, opening people’s hearts, eyes and minds. By sending a strong, visually compelling message, we can help people see beyond their daily worries, and perhaps help to provoke grass-roots action towards a sustainable, ecologically balanced world.
I have now settled down here in beautiful Albany, on WA’s South-West coast, to develop my practise – and to follow my dream.

I am the artistic director / director/ choreographer / rigger and performing artist of Natural Wings, a company I set up in 2005 after gaining a theatre arts degree (WAAPA) and circus arts degree (CircoArts NZ).
I produce large scale and intimate aerial-theatre works, predominately for outdoor festivals, and have a strong drive to perform in rural places, in often non traditional spaces (e.g. salt lake ).
A lot of Natural Wings’ shows have received awards for their innovation. Such awards include: Best Solo Show at Wellington Fringe, Best WA Circus Show at Fringe World (twice), Best Production Team at the Blue Room theatre, and People’s choice at Toronto Buskerfest; With 1.7 million spectators, it’s one of the largest street art festivals in the world. That was definitely a career highlight!

Collaboration WA Inc, is a meeting of minds, with a common goal.
Collaboration WA Inc was conceived in 2008, as a way of raising the profile of wood art in WA. They engage in a number of projects, including Exhibitions, collaborative workshops, demonstrations, and master classes. The workshops are attended by some of WA’s best wood artists, as well as invited guests from interstate, and overseas. They now have a reputation, for organising world class events, of their kind, and have hosted some of the best international practitioners in this field. Collaboration WA Inc, was very fortunate, to receive a grant from Country Arts WA which enabled them stage their very first workshop, from then on they have gone from strength to strength.

As an artist
Despina is a professional artist and participates in exhibitions and artist trails. Painting is a life-long passion. Despina sold her first painting as a 16 year old. Although Despina paints in a largely colourist manner, she is not limited to a ‘particular style’ or genre. She challenges herself with a variety of media and is known for her experimental and quirky works. Her subject matter is diverse, from still life, to figurative studies and landscapes; Despina also works with fibres, to create small fabric constructions embellishing them with found objects, wire, thread or whatever takes her fancy, bringing together the richness of her Greek-Egyptian cultural heritage, her love of nature and every-day experiences. Her artistic creations come alive through the use of emotions, relationships and story drawing inspiration from the colourful characters of Toodyay as much as from the more reflective moments of daily life.
Despina’s work can be viewed directly from her studio, by appointment only, or during artist trails or other local festivals and events. Please contact her on 0435 121 058 for a Studio appointment. She is only too happy to show you around.
Despina is currently compiling a visual journey of artwork and journal writing that traces her family’s refugee and migrant routes, invoked through recent work with refugees on the Greek island of Chios.
As an Art Therapist and Counsellor
Despina is a psychotherapist, art & play therapist, counsellor, educator, and clinical supervisor. She runs a multi-disciplinary private practice and works with children, youth and adults, individually, with couples, families and groups. Despina has much to offer with over 30 years of combined experience in psychiatric, educational and community settings. She specializes in the areas of grief and loss, relationship counselling, mental health and group work. Despina involves herself in a variety of community-based projects. In addition she collaborates with local agencies to serve the needs of individual clients or to provide group programmes.
Cert. Mental Health; Cert (Child Centred Play Therapy); Cert (Prof Supervisor); DCA (ATh); MA (ATh); Post Grad Dip (Counselling); Dip. Teaching; Associateship Art; Dip (Graphic Design)
As a teacher and Educator
Despina started her teaching career in 1976. Forty years of empowering individuals and developing capacities can only be described as an act of love. Firstly in schools, then privately in studios and community settings. Despina believes that working creatively gives meaning to personal experiences. Her teaching style and therapeutic methods are founded on the premise that everyone has the capacity to create and to express their inner imagery. The images or enactments created are viewed as agents for change, growth and creative and artistic development. As each person explores and participates in their own story of creating, they come to understand, accept and to build bridges to personal well-being, enhance their communication and develop their skill-set

The Festival of Busselton is the largest, most popular community-run Festival in rural Western Australia. Over 20 events are held every January within the City of Busselton – Dunsborough, Vasse and Busselton townsites – attended by more than 30,000 people. Events are family-focused, generally free of charge to attend, involve about 2000 participants in addition to the estimated 30,000 spectators or audience members. The Festival forms part of a larger set of events happening in Busselton over January, totaling over 110 events.
The Festival is a significant historical and cultural event that is important to the local community. In 2019 The Festival of Busselton will be in it’s 55th year and has grown significantly over the years and has continued to provide free events and activities for the enjoyment of local residents and visitors to the region. The festival is a testament to the committee members who work tirelessly over the year to put together the calendar of events. Over the years the Festival of Busselton has also grown exponentially to become an important reason as to why some visitors choose to holiday within the City of Busselton in the 3rd week of January. It’s traditionally been the start of the shoulder tourism season rather than the peak period in the South West.
It’s also significant as the event has ensured that the event celebration is suitable and accessible for all members of the community with events across all genres of art and theatre, and appealing to all age brackets. As an ‘all inclusive event’ for people with disabilities, multicultural groups, seniors, families, children and Aboriginal people are all an important components of our celebration and audience.
Overall the festival is significant part of Busselton’s historical and cultural identity and the festival is so important to the local community. We have children attending the children’s treasure hunt of the children that attended the first children’s treasure hunt in 1986. It’s the only annual event in Busselton which celebrates and fosters community spirit.

MAD brings together a diverse range of community members to build relationships through art and culture and provides people with the opportunity to discover their creative potential.
MAD formed in 2006 to meet the local community’s demand for a variety of arts and cultural activities to which they otherwise did not have access. The group consists of a diverse range of community members and utilises arts and cultural activities to enhance community spirit and reduce social isolation. With a focus on skills development, MAD aims to empower the local community to meet their own creative and cultural needs. Through organised projects, locals are trained and upskilled to a level where they are able to facilitate workshops themselves. Aiming to engage a broad range of community members, workshops are often held in unconventional places and at various times to make them as accessible as possible. Some of the MAD projects have included silver clay jewellery, printmaking, cake decorating, metal sculpting, photography, polymer clay, textiles, grant writing, creative volunteering, conceptual development, dance, youth theatre, animation and digital graffitti. “We love our home town of Mullewa and the country lifestyle it provides. We see our work as a vital contribution to the town’s livability and cultural landscape.”

Kelsie Miller has established a strong career within the Australian music industry over the past few years. Relatively new to the scene, she has turned her hand to event promotion, marketing & publicity, artist bookings, artist management and graphic design; using her skills and passion to build a business that is widely respected across Australia.
Having spent several years as the Marketing Manager at the Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre, Kelsie left to focus on her independent live music shows – Good Nights. Since starting Good Nights in August 2015 she has hosted over 60 events showcasing 100+ Australian singer-songwriters.
These shows are becoming a renowned part of the Australian music industry, with many touring artists applying to play the shows as part of their national tours. She also coordinates and manages stages for several Western Australian community events such as the Bunbury Show, the Mandurah Stretch Arts Festival and the Bunbury Fringe Festival.
In addition to running Good Nights, Kelsie has recently taken on the management of Queensland artist Josh Rennie-Hynes and his new duo, The Ahern Brothers. Since taking over their management she has overseen the launch of their debut album; coordinated a national album launch tour; booked them spots on several Australian festival lineups and secured them the headline support slot for Australian music legends’ Tex, Don & Charlie’s national tour.
Always looking for new challenges and opportunities, Kelsie has also started taking on artist bookings and publicity for touring musicians in Western Australia. She currently books for a number of Australian artists including Dusty Boots & Adam Harpaz, and is working on the publicity for several tours including Victorian-based artists Little Georgia.

Christopher Young was born in small-town New Zealand in the mid-seventies. After finishing his studies he moved to Germany in 1996 before settling in Western Australia in 2002.
Isolation is a recurring theme in his life and work – the remoteness of growing up in semi-rural New Zealand, the loneliness of living in Germany as a poor German speaker and lately the geographic and ideological seclusion of life in Australia, have all coloured his artistic practice.
Context, coding in images and a lack of a personal cultural library have been central themes explored in his work.
He majored in Photography and exhibits on a regular basis in Western Australia where he now lives with his artist wife.

With an ever present personal restlessness, I have a desire to interpret the natural landscape in its intimacy and boldness. Living and working in the Kimberley and Northern Territory for the past 28 years has formed me as an artist. With the organic mediums of watercolour and ceramics, I respond to the dramatic colour , space and energy of the land and sea, capturing a moment in time.
I hope to inspire others to see and feel through an Artists eye!
Karen’s success in the Arts industry lies in her true connection with the people, students and communities she engages with. Karen is excited to be bringing the Arts and her experience into the Health arena since moving to the South West, with a new Project Officer role at St John of God’s Hospital, Mt Lawley. This is a strong positive link that she has identified and nurtured in her training and engagement with people from many different cultural backgrounds, individuals with disabilities, those who have experienced diversity, and across all age groups.

Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre (BREC) is the arts hub of the South West, bringing laughter, excitement, culture and entertainment to the region. BREC has been an important part of Bunbury’s landscape since its establishment in 1990, with over half of the initial construction costs raised by the Bunbury community. Since then, BREC has developed into the premier entertainment venue in the South West, offering a varied and engaging selection of dance, music, comedy, drama, children’s shows, circus, opera and much more. BREC’s expansion in 2014 saw the Centre more than double in size, allowing them to expand their program and bring new and exciting activities to the community. The original 810 seat Stage One theatre continues to deliver large scale productions, while the new 242 seat Cube theatre has given BREC the flexibility to offer more intimate, small scale productions and events. The beautiful Sky Bar and Wellington Suite offers sweeping views across the Leschenault Inlet and allows BREC to cater to a variety of corporate and private functions, conferences and events.

Hi, I am Suraj Sathe, Writer, Director & Producer. Performing arts and entertainment has been a core part of my life. Since a young age, I have done a lot of direction for plays and choreographed different dance forms like salsa, hip-hop and freestyle. I am most passionate about directing films, but I never realised how much I love writing scripts until I started writing down the ideas that kept popping in my brain. There was a constant stream of ideas and thoughts that kept seeking my attention and gave me sleepless nights and converting these ideas into tangible emotions made me happy! I want to seek satisfaction and happiness by making films that will make my audience content, excited, sad, hopeful and much more.

Marnie Giroud studied visual art and media and teaching at Edith Cowan and Murdoch universities. She spent a decade working as an art specialist in schools and running community art workshops and exhibitions in regional and metropolitan schools.
Her work has been exhibited in Perth and regional WA including joint exhibitions at Houghton Winery and Ambrook Wines in the Swan Valley, and has won several awards. Her animal cartoons are strongly influenced by cartoonists Gary Larson and Jim Davis and have been used in books and newspaper columns.
Marnie’s preferred mediums include mixed media and wire sculpture. Her passion for wildlife conservation is evident through her works depicting native fauna. Art series include Wired Wildlife, Mammals by Moonlight,Shifty Sheep, Secret Life of Sheep and Freaky Farm. Marnie’s cartoon characters prove popular with a wide audience. A percentage of funds made from the sales of those series are donated to wildlife and animal rescue charities.
Marnie spent many years visiting family who farmed near the wheat belt town of Mukinbudin where she developed a fascination for sheep at an early age. “This is mainly due to my Uncle Noel who used to laugh at my adoration of woolly creatures”. Her sheep series are a direct result of this life experience.
After working in state government in conservation and education for nearly a decade, Marnie now runs a small business called Eco Gecko – Environment & Design, specialising in arts, environment and education.

Full time artist since 1977 and arrival in Bridgetown. Sculptor, Designer, Technologist, Digital and Multimedia, Photographer, Filmmaker. I have worked in Bronze, Stone, Plastics, Wood, Semi Precious Organic Materials, Cast Lead Crystal Glass, Metals and exotic applications
My sculptural styles move between high realism, organic cubism, fantasy and have developed 5 new sculptural styles unique to me. I think that any community project that helps to inspire the wider community or draw tourists to our town is essential for our future. Exposing art in any manner helps to create a culture that fosters belief in creative outcomes and makes a statement about our own creative potentials to the youth of our town. Fostering a Creative Community Culture in turn generates participation and growth towards becoming creative thinkers or participants.
Represented in The National Gallery Canberra, WA State Gallery, Gallery of the NT, National Mapping Library, Canberra. Rising from the Ashes, Understory Art in Nature, Northcliffe. Winner of Peoples Choice Award, Sculptures by the Sea, Bondi 2015.

I am now retired after a long career at Lotterywest, firstly as Director Grants and Community Development and then 22 years as Chief Executive.
This experience as well as my prior experience as a Social Worker has given me a lasting interest in the community and arts and cultural sector which was recognised by the Chamber of Culture and the Arts with a life membership in 2015 and by the University of Western Australia with an honorary degree in 2017.
For 6 months in 2016 I served as General Manager of West Australian Ballet. I now serve on the Boards of a diverse range of community and arts organisation.
The arts are an important part of my life and I believe they are a critical element of a good society.

I am a studio glass artist, working from Bouvard.
Anne’s work with glass began in 1990, in stained glass, she is also a qualified glazier. Moving to kiln formed glass was a natural move, the desire to express herself artistically was realised. Having completed a basic class Anne experimented for some years on her own. Workshops with Australian and International artists have extended her knowledge to enable her to develop her own distinctive body of work. Anne works as a full time glass practitioner in Bouvard, Western Australia in her purpose built studio.

Cheeditha is a small Aboriginal community not far from Roebourne in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. By 1975, all Aboriginal people were forced to move into Roebourne. But rather than live in town with all its problems, a group of elders camped in the old woolshed buildings of Mt Welcome Station, just south of Roebourne. In 1985, with the assistance of the WA Government, houses were built and a community has grown from these humble origins.
Art making in Roebourne originated with members of the Cheeditha community. In 2002 the Bujee Nhoor-Pu project was set up in the historic Galbraith Store at Cossack, supporting the production and sales of artworks. The success of the Bujee Nhoor-Pu project spread to the broader community of Roebourne and these founding artists formed several other independent art groups, reflecting the cultural diversity of the Roebourne area.
The revitalised Cheeditha Art Group carries on the commitment of those early artists and many of those practicing today are relatives of those founders. Over half of each sale goes directly to the artist with the balance going to Cheeditha Art Group to support new projects and build the livelihoods of residents.

A multi-disciplinary artist based in Dongara on the Mid West coast. Kelli’s artwork is largely experimental and mostly based on personal emotional experiences and connections – memories, longings, realities and nostalgia. The language of materials is a key aspect of her art – Kelli has a passion for objects with auras, histories and stories to tell. This enables work across a variety of media with a focus on found object assemblage, ceramics, cyanotype printing, textiles and stitch.

Currently a semi-retired teacher, I have been involved with the Pemberton Arts Group since its humble beginnings in 2004 and have coordinated the group since October 2009, working with the community on activities including “The Big Draw”, annual festivals (Unearthed Pemberton), workshops (for artists & community), the iconic Artscape (80m of artistic panels lit at night) & Children’s Pavers, the Centenary Tile project at Pemberton District High School and annual local exhibitions.
The Australian landscape inspires me in all its forms – forest, coastal plains and recently I’ve developed a passion and respect for the vast, awesome outback.

Kelly Gardner is a versatile singer songwriter, musician and looping solo artist. With formidable and adaptive vocals, anthem original compositions, rich harmonies and songwriting that crosses multiple genres, Kelly produces a wide variety of poignant, entertaining (and sometimes even hilarious) repertoire crossing adult contemporary, jazz, funk, indie music and even comedic genres using nothing but a piano, looper and one very powerful yet sensitive voice.
Her latest project “Kelea” is testament to her continuing growth as an artist. “Evolution” (due to be released in October 2017) is a powerful EDM anthem combining house beats with prayer-like lyrics and massive sonic walls of vocal harmony. Never afraid to take risks and break down genre-instilled barriers, Kelly tastefully cross-pollinates “Evolution” with a careful sprinkling of operatic and rock vocal lines, re-inforcing underlying hopes for the development of a higher world consciousness. Recordings of fierce winter winds at her ocean side home studio complete the track, making for an inspired listen.

Sailing in Exmouth Gulf is safe and convenient as long as one pays attention to the tides and weather forecast. Racing occurs throughout the year every second Sunday and most races are held in the gulf just off from the EYC itself.
There are a number of club boats that can be reserved and used by members or visitors to the club. On occasion, special races are held some distance from the club and may entail a camp overnight- this may be on the west coast at Tantabiddi or in the gulf at Tamarisk, some 30 km south of Exmouth.
The club could not survive and thrive without new members so anyone interested in the chance to sail a catamaran, whether as crew or skipper, should come along on race day for some good fun and sport!

Born in Western Australia, Joanne Duffy uses her combination of a Bachelor of Arts (Design) and self-taught experience to depict the Australian landscape in an Expressionist style. Her paintings draw inspiration from her childhood experiences of growing up in rural WA and the love of native flora and its environment. Joanne’s abstract expressionist style explores her interests in our landscape and the emotional responses and memories it evokes within us. Her intense use of colour and sweeping brush marks create a sense of movement within her paintings, evoking glimpses of Australia’s rural landscape. The resulting artworks are reflective, full of vitality, intense colour and emotion. As an award winning artist Joanne’s work is held in private collections through Australia, Singapore, Germany & Malaysia. Representation: The Studio Gallery, Yallingup; and Gallery 360, Subiaco.
